I wrote a letter to a specialist cancer help group, who have specialist nurses to answer any questions that patients may have. Yesterday I recieved a reply and I am confused now. In the letter I told my background medical history and my current levels of IGg, bone marrow plasma and Bence Jones Protein and all the relevant information they need. But the reply I got back said that I should question my Haematologist as to why I have been told that the 13% plasma in my bone marrow was classified as normal marrow. I should only have 3 to 5% plasma in my marrow so its an abnormal reading.

The reply from these nurses also stated that any IGg level over 20 was classified as smouldering myeloma or myeloma, I have a level of 44.8.

I am so confused as to whether I have MGUS or have progressed to overt Multiple Myeloma. Its really difficult for doctors and haematologists to tell if someones condition is MGUS or myeloma, but its crucial that they don’t misdiagnose one for the other because MGUS requires no treatment, but myeloma requires Chemotherapy. If you give Chemo to a patient who doesn’t need it they can develop leukaemia, but if you dont treat a myeloma patient they will die so the diagnosis has to be a definate one. I will be so damn glad when the 28th Feb comes so I can get my results and stop worrying until the next time.
